Artist Statement

"Primarily, my youth was saturated in varied vocational experience: drafting, carpentry, lutherie, metalsmithing and computer programming. In some measure, all these disciplines prepared me to begin working with glass. I started working hot glass in college and was immediately consumed. However, in the past three years I have taken control of my creative energies. Entering into my mature period, making glass is no longer reflexive, it is reflective. Glass objects from my studio chronicle the passage of time and symbolize my ideas and thoughts.

Though entirely my own original creation, my murrini work is preceded and influenced by a hundred generations of glass artists. During the l century BC, Egyptians were forming and fusing murrini, to be followed by the Romans, the Venetians, the French and the Americans, each appropriating the technique to serve their own purposes. The enduring appeal of murrini lies in the endless variety and complexity of design that can be produced and the possibility of adding intentional expressive meaning to an object. Each one of my designs begins with forming and stretching cane out of hot glass, then sectioning these sticks of glass into slices known as murrini. These murrini are then incorporated into unique and limited production items through a combination of advanced glass making techniques that I develop in my studio. I work with historical and humanistic themes: romantic love, approaching loss and the passage of time."
