Artist Info:
Glass artist Wes Hunting"I came up with the title "Color Field" to refer to the intense colors and patterns which are "drawn" onto the glass surface at temperatures exceeding 1,600 degrees. The forms are always simple so that they never detract from the complexities of the surface decoration. I like to refer to the millefiori decoration on my vessels as "drawings", since I make all my works the same size as a sheet of drawing paper. Sometimes the drawings echo the contours of the vessel and sometimes they establish a contradictory rhythm. In either instance, it is important to me that the form structure and the drawing structure be integrated - that they do not appear to be two different entities.

"I conceive and decorate my work always in the round, taking all possible points of view into consideration. Interior space is as important as the object itself. Because sculptors are mostly concerned with the space outside the object, I don't think of myself as a sculptor working in glass, but as a glass blower working in the container tradition. The most fascinating aspect of my work is adjusting and playing with color. The combinations seem endless. One of the "extras" in working in glass is the additional quality of transparency. This creates possibilities with color and composition not inherent with other media.

"My main source of inspiration is my immediate surroundings. For this reason, I relocated to Wisconsin. Here, we have only rocks, trees and bodies of water to look at. I like to study a single form at a time - really get involved with it. I believe if there is too much visual information, I won't have time to develop my own ideas. When I lived in Chicago, I felt the sensory overload stifled my work. I have dedicated my entire life to glass. If one person can enjoy the freedom and beauty that my vessels offer, I feel I have been a success." Entire contents © Copyright NJM Gallery, Portsmouth NH (603) 433-4120.
