"I grew up at the end of Labor-In-Vain road. It is a winding road that passes through the woods, past the fields, and over a bridge. The bridge crosses over a creek. The creek leads to a river, and the river flows out to the ocean beyond. As a boy, I enjoyed rowing out on a gusty day to bounce about in the waves. There are whitecaps everywhere. Aside from the sloshing and slapping of water against the boat, it is very quiet and peaceful. The rowboat rides up each wave, takes in the view, and slides down the other side surrounded by froth and foam. The sea is in constant motion, and its' vastness and power fascinate and humble me. This then, is the starting point for my art, a personal connection with the sea difficult to describe but universal to anyone familiar with the ocean. It is my hope that the work may transport the viewer, if only for an instant, to an offshore memory of their own." |
